Eruption Onset Magnified and Timelapsed

The onset of Kīlauea’s third eruption of 2023 on September 10 was captured by USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory cameras, which we first magnify then accelerate to better illustrate volcanic processes. Following the initial fountain, the fissure line continued to open more vents and issue lava flows into the crater.
