Introduction:
As a co-founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Education and Resilience Institute (HVERI), Dane is dedicated to preparing communities for natural disasters prevalent in Hawaii. His journey into this vital role began with the eruption of Kilauea in 2018, an event that highlighted the community's ability to aid itself and others during disasters. Dane played a pivotal role in the efforts led by Hawaii Tracker during this challenging period, showcasing both on-the-ground and online community support.

Past Projects:
Homes Lost Map — a GIS project to map homes lost to lava in the 2018 eruption, used by FEMA, DoD, and Hawaii State EMA.
Hawaiian Language Transcription — an AI project that project that provided an early proof of concept for the Hawaiian Language to be transcribed.
Pohoiki Boat Ramp Restoration — Collaborated with state DOBAR, private contractors, and the community to devise a restoration plan for Puna's only boat ramp, overwhelmed with sand in the 2018 eruption.
Digital Resilience Program, Dane has helped lead in the development of a strategy that leverages social media and moderated online groups with a similar geographical focus for gathering and disseminating information during natural disasters. This approach is complemented by efforts to establish a distributed network resilient to power, phone, internet, and power outages. In partnership with Vibrant Hawaii and their Resilience Hubs, he has helped establish community hubs that remain functional during service disruptions.
The Hawaii Tracker Project, Dane has administered the Hawaii Tracker Project since 2019. This project, a continuation of the response and recovery efforts to the 2018 eruption in Lower Puna, involves maintaining a Facebook group with over 125,000 members. As its administrator, Dane ensures it serves as a reliable platform for residents and visitors to exchange information about disasters impacting the island.
